The Home and Garden Centre make it easy. You do not even need to design your own garden shed, our experts have created a great value range featuring the best quality
DIY building kits available in the UK.
Many shed designs are kept elegant and simple to enable a variety of uses; the most popular design styles tend to be traditional apex styles using T&G construction (i.e. tongue and groove construction) and our great-value overlap sheds (using the overlap construction method).
Some shed designs go that little bit further and offer interesting design options such as
curved roofs and innovative designs. Whatever you’re looking for we can help you find it.
Here are our tips for anyone considering buying and building their own garden shed or workshop…

Garden Sheds
The first thing you will need to consider is the use of the garden shed.
In the UK especially, garden sheds protect some of your most precious possessions - gardening equipment being the most obvious, as well as bikes and home gym equipment, so it’s important that you are happy that these valuable possessions are safe and secure.
To accommodate this, our garden sheds are available in a vast amount of different shapes and sizes, which include:
Traditional Apex Sheds – this is the typical garden shed that we all know and think of, they start form sizes 6’ x 4’ going up to the mighty 30’ x 12’ by Tree Tops.
Different construction methods are available (see below)
Traditional Pent Sheds – Pent sheds are very popular and feature one slanted roof, again they are available using different construction methods.
Potting sheds – can be a happy medium between a garden shed and a greenhouse. They usually feature glazed windows to allow an ideal planting atmosphere within this shed.
Security Sheds – Our security sheds feature small-fixed high-level windows that are fitted to one side of the shed (can be fitted either side) to put off a theft by reducing access whilst restricting the view of any valuable equipment.
Where to start?
To start with you will need to look at what equipment and other items you will need to store. This will help in determining what size you would like. It is also important to think about the size of your garden in relation to the shed, we would all like the largest and grandest available but its of no real use if it doesn’t fit. So before you start looking measure the area you are planning to put it.
Have a think about what you are going to be using the shed for. This will help when choosing the building method. If you are planning to spend a lot of time in your shed you may want a more insulated construction than a shed you were simply using for storage.
Also think about the garden you are going to be placing the shed in we have many different designs for you to browse through and you are bound to find the perfect shed to fit your garden.
Shed Constructions Methods
Garden sheds can have a variety of different construction methods, for you to consider when choosing yours.
Overlap Construction – This involves overlaying square cut timber boards and nailing them into place. This method of construction results in an economical garden building with a charming rustic appearance that can be enhanced by imaginative use of coloured wood preserver.
Shiplap construction - Shiplap method of construction consists of tongue and groove boards where each piece of tongue and groove timber has a slot cut all along one edge (groove), and small outcrop on the opposite edge (tongue). Pieces fit tightly together to ensure a close fit, and are superior to our overlap-clad models due to the provision of the 'jointed' tongue & groove to the walls.
Interlocking log timber - This method of construction uses the same principle as shiplap, but timber used is high quality log timber and pieces actually interlock at the corners resulting in a durable, luxury effect and high quality building.
Taking these different methods of construction into account you should be on course to choosing the garden shed or workshop for you.
Say No to Unsightly uPVC Sheds and Corrugated Metal Workshops!
The aim of any building project should be to create the highest quality building, at a good price, with as minimal impact on the environment as possible. Our experience in building sheds and workshops all over the UK over the last ten years has taught us that timber is the only respectable building material in this sense.
We evaluate all of our suppliers based on this mix of quality, cost and environmental performance; metal and PVC suppliers just cannot compete. We actively promote the use of timber for building projects; not only is timber extremely high-performance, durable, structurally superior and tested by history (the oldest buildings in the world left standing are timber) but unlike metal, cement, bricks or plastic, wood offers these qualities naturally, with no input from us.
Wood is healthy, has beautiful grain patterns and warm surfaces, and people just like to touch it all these features make wood the perfect material for your garden shed.
Planning restrictions for Sheds and Workshops
In going through the design process keep in mind that there's no rule stating that your garden shed or workshop and house must match - two unique structures aside each other can make a bold statement. Many of the structures we sell could be classed as temporary or demountable with many planning authorities, but always rely on your local council to advise you as to your need for planning permission for a free-standing workshop. Of course this will only apply to our larger range sheds and workshops.
Planning Support
Whilst most councils will be able to give advice based on the information on our website, some may require you to make a planning application, or require further information. Our friendly team are more than happy to help if you have problems downloading, opening or accessing your plans.
