Finnlife Log Cabin Kits built to last

Finnforest log cabins come with different features. The constraints of size and design dictate the use of different materials. The one thing all these approaches share is a commitment to longevity and lasting good looks.

Finnforest log cabin components are precision-cut from top quality Scandinavian softwood for a perfect fit, first timber. The time used comes from well-managed forests where indigenous wildlife and forest industries co-exist – and where the rate of tree plantings exceeds harvesting.

Different log cabins feature different log thicknesses. Thicker logs provide bigger cabins with addition strength and insulation.

Enhance you log cabin with Underfloor heating

Imagine a heating system providing you with sufficient heat to warm your toes as well as the space around you on a winter’s morning. Underfloor heating is economic and controllable at the turn of a dial, an ideal optional extra when purchasing your log cabin. The flat ribbon underfloor heating has many features and benefits. It fits on any subfloor and under any floor covering as a primary heat source. This saves space are there are no need for radiators. The heating elements are only 1.8mm in depth making it the most slim line heating source on the market. Because it is wider and closer together than any other system you are guaranteed a more even spread of heat with no hot or cold spots. With the heating elements achieving such a large floor coverage it heats up quicker than any other form of underfloor heating. The system is very easy to install and only requires a Pear P qualified electrician to connect the thermostat.

Caring for the environment

Finnforest has always been committed to forestry practises that let everybody enjoy the natural beauty of wood, without making the environment pay the price. As long as stocks are carefully managed, wood is a fully renewable resource, and that’s why we work with suppliers to make sure we put back everything we take from the environment. We also support Forest Certification and Chain of Custody – it’s guaranteed that the wood we source only ever comes from well-managed, sustainable forests. All our cabins are sourced from, PEFC materials.

Maximise the life of your Log Cabin with Timber Treatment

During assembly of your garden building, some of the pre-treated floor and foundations beams may need be trimmed to length. Any freshly exposed timber should be treated using a suitable end grain treatment. As soon as you have fully assembled your log cabin you should treat the timber with a suitable wood preservative. Your cabin will benefit from regular inspection and maintenance. Please refer to the coating manufacture’s guidelines for recommended usage.

Log Timber Treatment

Building Settlement

All log cabins settle within a few months. The timber cabin walls will compress as roof and wind loads are applied and the joints close up. Moisture content of the logs will also vary from season to season, which will cause expansion and contraction of the wall logs. This is natural occurrence, which can be limited by the application of an exterior treatment. Please do not affix anything to the logs that may restrict the log movement and settling process.

Water Proofing your Finnforest Log Cabin Kit

Your cabin design incorporates a Windblock system. While this provides a great deal of protection against the elements, there are some things that you can do to protect your cabin even further.

Damp Proof Membrane.

-You may want to lay D.P.M strips directly on the top of the floor beams and foundation beams to isolate any moisture soaked into the foundation.

Silicone sealant.

To ensure your garden log cabin is as weatherproof as possible, the following areas will needed to be sealed after the cabin has been coated.

-Around the window/door frames

-From eaves to foundation at each corner (3 joints per corner)

-Any gaps visible on the log ends

These sealants are widely available and easy to use, however they will need to be re-applied regularly throughout the life of your cabin.

Water Proofing Your Log Cabin

Internal Storm Battens

Some log cabins are fitted with internal storm battens (wooden battens, fixed to the interior of the cabin with coach bolts). It may be necessary to release the tension of the lower coach bolt to allow the storm batter to move freely and sit flush against the cabin wall. This should be checked regularly throughout the life of your cabin to prevent gaps opening up between the logs.

Internal Storm Battens

Integral storm rods

Some log cabins are fitted with integral storm rods (threaded metal rods, running through the centre of the logs). When fitting integral storm rods, ensure that there is approximately 50mm of clearance between the bottom end of the storm rod and your base allowing the cabin to settle without the storm rod pushing upwards and damaging the cabin. This clearance should be checked regularly throughout the life of your cabin whilst also ensuring the fixings are kept tight.
