Introduction to treating your timber building
Many wooden garden buildings are supplied with a base coat, typically water based. Base coats provided in the factory are normally only a primer, and you should apply a good quality wood treatment either before or during assembly, and then annually after. Varnish is not recommended, but there are a large number of preservatives and treatments out there in a variety of colours. We recommend using a high-quality, preferably spirit based treatment, for longer lasting protection. Water based treatments can become less effective after a few months of being weathered away.
Treating your timber building
We recommend that you wear old clothing during timber treatment, as the treatment may splatter. Gloves should be worn as spirit based treatment can irritate the skin, if not ensure that hands are washed straight after use.
Treatment should be considered at the construction stage of your timber building, as some areas will be inaccessible to treat once the wooden building has been erected. When treating your building you should ensure all surfaces are covered generously, as moisture can penetrate the smallest of openings and over a period of time your building will show signs of damp and even rot.
Once this is complete you may also wish to apply a bit of colour to your building, with exterior timber paint.
