Grow your own chilli peppers

If you are cautiously approaching the grow-your-own-organic-vegetables phenomena, chilli peppers could be the best place to start.

Most grow well on a windowsill or in pots outside a sheltered spot. Plant in Spring for an abundance of shiny, colourful pods in summer. Don’t be tempted to buy plants…they are rarely labelled and you won’t know what you’re getting (far better to grow your own).

·Sow two or three seeds into 7.5cm pots and cover with a dusting of compost.

·Keep on a sunny windowsill and wait for germination (up to six weeks)

·Transfer each plant into a larger pot and keep indoors for another 12 weeks, remembering to water and feed regularly.

·Plants should then be tough enough to face the big outdoors, either in containers or planted directly into the soil (at least 15cm apart).

·As each grows, pinch out the growing tip to encourage a full, bushy plant, which will drip with shiny chilli peppers!
